Preventative Care

Preventative care has an enormous impact on the health of our patients. People live longer than ever before, and most understand that a commitment to a healthy lifestyle improves the quality of life as we age.

At Alabama Family Medicine Clinic, our priorities for preventative medicine include:

  • Helping patients to deal with addictions
  • Advising on nutrition
  • Recommending moderate and regular exercise
  • Practicing mental health first aid.

We hope to educate our patients about their personal preventive care needs and link them to public health and community programs promoting preventative health care.

Physical Examination and Health Maintenance

At Alabama Family Medicine Clinic, we believe health maintenance to be comprehensive and coordinated care that promotes quality of life through wellness and prevents diseases and other health complications.

Health maintenance includes regular physical examinations and screening to reduce the risk of premature illness and serious complications.

Health checks for adults identify patients at risk of certain diseases by the application of testing, imaging, screening, medical history and physical examination. The goal is early detection and treatment associated with better outcomes.

A comprehensive health history is a valuable component in the diagnosis of acute illness. It can provide vital information about a person's background and lifestyle.

At AFMC, we are committed to understanding your health history.

Health education and counseling prepares families to participate in a healthy lifestyle. Your health care provider will challenge you and your family to set healthy goals.

A nutrition assessment is an important step in the management of a patient's nutritional status. It helps determine if adequate nutrients are available and absorbed by the body.

Gender-specific health contributes to the overall well-being of a person. Your healthcare provider will follow the guidelines for screening and address any concerns you may have/refer you to an appropriate specialist.

When you follow annual health screening guidelines, you can be confident about your general health and address specific concerns you have for yourself or the family you care for.

At Alabama Family Medicine Clinic, we are well prepared and equipped to help with your journey to good health. We respect your choices and support your personal goals to live your best life.

Routine screening

Alabama Family Medicine Clinic makes lab testing convenient for you with our in house phlebotomist, (health care worker training specifically to draw blood)

This is a quick and efficient way to get the blood work done, patients don't need to make another trip to a lab.

Immunization

Our patient population is at risk for many vaccine-preventable diseases. We can protect our patients with vaccination against infectious diseases such as influenza, COVID-19 and pneumonia.

At Alabama Family Medicine Clinic, we provide education on vaccine-preventable diseases and the importance of immunization. It is our goal to address misconceptions and personal concerns regarding immunization.

The flu may seem a minor setback or a nuisance to some. But for seniors aged 65 and above, whose immune systems are no longer as efficient, the flu can threaten their lives or disable their ability to function independently.

The most important vaccines include:

  • Flu vaccine
  • A pneumococcal vaccine to prevent pneumonia
  • Shingles vaccine
  • Tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis vaccine
  • Covid-19

When certain health conditions, occupations, or lifestyle risks are present, some seniors may require vaccinations for:

  • Hepatitis A or B
  • Meningococcal disease
  • Varicella
  • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR)

And for older adults who travel, we will offer relevant vaccines such as ;

  • yellow fever vaccine or others.

During flu season, you do everything you can to avoid becoming sick. You wash your hands, avoid contact with sick people, eat healthy foods, now you wear a mask, and many of you always get your flu shot.

Research continues to improve vaccinations for the elderly because we know they work to maintain health and quality of life as we age.
